The Renaissance of Gaudenzio Ferrari

24th March – 1st July 2018
Until 16th September 2018 in Varallo
Exhibition curated by Giovanni Agosti and Jacopo Stoppa

A major exhibition devoted to Gaudenzio Ferrari (Valduggia c.1480 – Milan 1546), one of the most important Italian Renaissance artists, will showcase his works at sites across the region: Varallo (Palazzo dei Musei), Vercelli (Arca) and Novara (Broletto). All three sites are already home to masterpieces by Gaudenzio Ferrari and together form a comprehensive itinerary.

The sites present a chronological exhibition of works by Gaudenzio, his contemporaries and pupils, some of which on loan from other museums in Italy and abroad. In Varallo the focus is on the artist’s early career, from his formative years to the challenges of the Sacro Monte; in Vercelli it looks at the period of his artistic maturity, whilst in Novara it examines his final works.

Varallo – The best of youth

Gaudenzio’s earliest works, produced between the mid 1490s and mid 1520s, are on show in the rooms of the Palazzo dei Musei. They range from the oldest remaining works from the Franciscan Sacro Monte complex to Gaudenzio’s earliest paintings, traces of which remain in the Chapel dedicated to the Sepulchre of the Virgin, a reconstruction of which is presented. It also includes the great polyptychs for the cities of Vercelli and Varallo. This section examines how Gaudenzio progressed from the abstract and analytical style of Bramantino, which he combined with Leonardo da Vinci’s theories on the representation of movements of the soul, to an even more complex vision influenced by Perugino and the Roman Grotesque style.

Vercelli – What they call maturity

The exhibition is housed at the Arca exhibition centre, in the Church of San Marco. On 2nd December 1530, Gaudenzio was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for this Augustinian church and to decorate a chapel, which no longer stands. We know that Gaudenzio lived in Vercelli from at least 1529, when he accepted to paint the altarpiece for the Church of San Cristoforo, the district where he lived and the church that would house his masterpieces, which were completed in 1534. This part of the exhibition includes the Adoration of the Infant with a bishop (Giovanni Angelo Arcimboldi?), from Sarasota. For the first time, the Lamentation over the Dead Christ final painting (now in Budapest) is flanked by a preparatory cartoon (from the Albertina Academy in Turin), thus allowing the public to compare the works as if they were in Gaudenzio’s workshop.

Novara – Back in the game

At the Broletto Complex in Novara the exhibition focuses on works from the latter decades of Gaudenzio’s career, which should have represented a personal triumph. Amidst the rising tide of Mannerism, with artists from outside competing for the biggest commissions in Milan, Gaudenzio tried to adapt to the new tastes: he made his scenes more complicated and the figures bigger. The altarpieces for San Celso, and his final works for the Churches of San Giorgio al Palazzo and Santa Maria della Passione (home to what Giorgio Vasari also refers to as the “Beautiful Last Supper”) are examples of how he strived to keep up with the times towards the end of his life.
